Controlling contamination at the source

Significant corrosion and high levels of hydrogen sulfide and chlorine gas in one of its key pumping stations prompted the Regional Municipality of York (Newmarket, Ontario, Canada) to investigate the root causes and establish long-term strategies for addressing the problems. A comprehensive review of existing reports and historical data, as well as collaboration with an industrial discharger, identified the sources of the problems. Based on this analysis, the project team working for the region recommended a host of engineering, operational, and regulatory changes to control concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and chlorine gas entering the pumping station.
