Analysis 1 The Market for Submarines 2020-2029

The last year has seen a significant change in the submarine market resulting from a convergence of factors. One of these, and probably the most troubling, is the South Korean decision to put a diesel-electric-powered ballistic missile submarine into series production. From a South Korean perspective, these submarines provide a much-needed deterrent against the threat of nuclear-armed land-based ballistic missiles fired from North Korea. These have too short a flight time to allow an adequate defense against them. Deterrence is the only option, and the Dosan Ann Changho class SSBs will certainly provide that.
