Britain's Fairey Aviation Company flew the prototype Firefly on 22 December 1941. The war was now freshly into its third year and the nation desperately needed new combat aircraft. The Royal Navy had been operating the Fairey Fulmar - an adequate aircraft provided it did not run into the Luftwaffe. The new Firefly would be 40-mph faster than the Fulmar and it would bring a battery of four 20mm cannon to the battle. The newly developed Rolls-Royce Griffon IIB could pump out 1730-hp and the Firefly was superior in every aspect to the Fulmar.
