Neuralcrestcellsinthecranialregionofthechickembryoinitiallymigrateintoacell-freespacebetweentheheadectodermandmesoderm.Theprimaryobjectiveofthepresentstudywastodefinethenatureofthematrixinthiscell-freespace.Inovoadministrationofvariouslabeledcompoundsshowedthatthecell-freespacebecameheavilylabeledwithglucosaminebetweenstages9and10withlittleornoincorporationoffucoseorsulfate.Theresultsobtainedbyautoradiographyandbiochemicalanalysisoflabeledmacromoleculesselectivelyextractedfromthiscell-freespacesuggestthathyaluronicacidisamajorcomponent.Theappearanceofhyaluronicacidcorrelateswithanincreaseinsizeofthecell-freespaceandcrestcellmigration.
