On November 25, an auditing consultant on staff with theGeorgia Public Service Commission (GA PSC) said in writtentestimony that Georgia Power’s plans to construct two WestinghouseAP1000s at the Vogtle nuclear power plant will facefurther delays. Georgia Power, a subsidiary of SouthernCompany, reported that it will bring the units online ahead ofthe regulator approved in service dates of November 2021 andNovember 2022 for Units 3 & 4, respectively. However, DonGrace, a consultant with the GA PSC said, “Unless performanceimproves significantly, those dates are significantlychallenged.” Grace attributed the delay to a backlog of constructionhours at the site, which have steadily risen during2019. He said that an analysis conducted for the period of July to September of this year showed that site workers requiredan additional 12 days to complete work that wasplanned for the period. Thus, Grace’s analysis shows that ifthis latest trend continues, up to a 10-month delay could beadded to the current project schedule.
