AN ENGLISH born actor, the aristocratic Peter Lawford, who had been friends with singer Frank Sinatra since the late 1940s, was an early member of Sinatra's Rat Pack. This group had been formed originally by Humphrey Bogart and named the Holmby Hills Rat Pack by Bogie's wife Lauren Bacall. The group included founding members such as David Niven, Errol Flynn, Spencer Tracy, and Cary Grant. Sinatra acquired the description in the 1960s when the media dubbed him and his cohorts the new Rat Pack. I first remember Lawford starring as the lead in "The Thin Man" TV series, which ran from 1957-59, where he reprised the part of amateur sleuth Nick Charles. The role was made famous on the big screen by William Powell. Lawford was cultivated further by Sinatra, as he had become an influential member of the Kennedy family by marrying John F. Kennedy's sister Patricia. Sinatra was fascinated by politics and the power and influence it exerted. Lawford was a very useful ally to Sinatra, who was backing the young senator from Massachusetts to become the next president of the U.S. in his run-off with then-Vice Pres. Richard Nixon.
