Congressional oversight hearings can be virtuous events with important results. Watergate conies to mind; history also records that congressional investigations into organized crime, unsafe drugs and labor racketeering were useful endeavors with tangible results. When Congress works, it can become the national enforcer—making sure citizens and businesses abide by the law and making sure the government does its job.
