Hollywood falls in love with technology

When military personnel conduct "mission rehearsals" on com-puter, they can create three-dimensional "virtual people" to simulate battles and other combat situations. This 3-D technology was originally devised for the visual-effects industry in Hollywood, where movie studios today are striving to produce increasingly spectacular scenes for their films. Visual effects, notes Greg Estes, product and technical-marketing manager at computer maker Silicon Graphics, "have become one of the main drivers of the business."
