The Los Angeles County Met ro pol i tanrnTrans por ta tion Author ity (Metro) issuedrnan RFP on Octo ber 25, invit ing pro pos alsrnfor the devel op ment of a MicroTransitrnpilot pro ject. Metro explains as fol lows:rn“Metro’s desire is to improve the cus -rntomer experience (user experience) andrnser vice level for cur rent Metro rid ers andrndrive new cus tomer acqui si tion by oper at -rning a new demand-respon sive tran sit ser -rnvice that offers res er va tion, pay ment, andrnreal-time customer infor mation availablernthrough a mobile appli ca tion. Metro’srnMicroTransit will be on-call when rid ersrnwant it, where they want it, con nect ingrnmore peo ple and places to our exist ing sys -rntem. The new ser vice will dynam i callyrnroute shared vehi cles to pick-up andrndrop-off loca tions based on cus tomerrndemand rather than a fixed sched ule andrnfixed stops. It will pro vide rid ers the abil ityrnto reserve, track, and pay for a ride inrnreal-time through a soft ware/tech nol ogyrnplat form. The new pub lic trans por ta tionrnser vice will be called “MicroTransit,”rnbecause the ser vice will be used for shortrntrips under approx i mately 20 min utes inrndura tion in defined ser vice zones, and uti -rnlize vehi cles that are smaller than tra di -rntional tran sit vehi cles. The ser vice wouldrnallow for a max i mum pick-up dis tancernfrom the point of ori gin (where a ride isrnrequested) and a max i mum drop-off dis -rntance from the point of des ti na tion, as wellrnas tar get dis tances below the max i mums.rnThe ser vice would be deployed through anrnagile soft ware/tech nol ogy plat form thatrnmay allow for devi ated fixed route in addi -rntion to dynamic rout ing. The ser vice isrnon-demand within the defined ser vice zonernand does not uti lize pre-deter mined stops.
