CHINESE government-controlled shipowner Shandong Marine will soon approach the market for two heavy-lift vessels to use in offshore construction and decommissioning work. People familiar with the bidding process told Upstream that Shandong Marine has sounded out offshore yards in China and will soon send out invitations to tender to at least three of them. Shandong Marine's list of contenders includes CIMC Raffles, China Merchants Heavy Industry and an unnamed yard in eastern China, according to sources. Of the yards to have shown an interest in the bid, CIMC Raffles could have an edge over other competitors given that the yard in China's Shandong province is already involved in the vessels' engineering work. Together with US engineering house National Oilwell Varco, CIMC Raffles has completed the design of the vessels' lift arm.
