MALAYSIA'S Petronas has chartered Maersk Drilling's semi-submersible Maersk Developer to drill an exploration well on Block 52 off Suriname in the second half of this year. The contract, with a firm value of about $20.4 million, is expected to last 75 days and includes integrated drilling services, mobilisation and demobilisation fees. It also carries a one-well option. Petronas confirmed earlier this year it was looking to spud the Sloanea-1 well on Block 52 around the third quarter of the year, with the prospect lying to the east of Apache's Maka Central and Sapakara West discoveries on contiguous Block 58. Block 52 covers 4749-square kilometres, north of the coast of Paramaribo, with water depths ranging between 50 and 1100 metres. Petronas operates the block in a 50:50 partnership with US supermajor ExxonMobil, which agreed to farm in to the block earlier this year.
