The 2009 passage of the "Post-9/11 G.I. Bill" continued the tradition of honoring service with opportunities for self-improvement. But after nearly six years, legislative and military leaders need to address some unintended consequences and evolve the law's implementation. The Department of Defense can use the G.I. Bill to recruit the most qualified individuals and retain the most talented leaders. Properly implemented, the return on investment is significant and will still carry on the tradition of rewarding uniformed service with education, opportunity, and social mobility.
