A computer aided study of the transient response of a two-lobe journal bearing with non-Newtonian lubricant is presented. To obtain a solution for a non-Newtonian lubricant, firstly the momentum and continuity equations for a Newtonian lubricant are solved using a finite element method and then the solution is upgraded iteratively. The non-Newtonian effect is introduced in each iteration by modifying the viscosity term using a cubic shear law. The nonlinear trajectories obtained in the present study indicate that the two-lobe journal bearing system becomes unstable even at values of non-dimensional journal mass less than the critical journal mass computed using the linearized equations of motion and Routh's criterion.
