DISTRIBUTING THE BROADBAND SIGNAL

In typical FTTH installations, the fiber-optic cable termi-nates at an optical network terminal (ONT) on the side ol the building, or just inside. Although some installations extend the actual fiber-optic cable from the ONT to digital devices (a computer, for example), most installations at present carry the voice, data and video signals into the home via existing "media" - copper wire, coaxial cables or wireless routers. Across relatively short distances, these existing in-home media can transmit a high bandwidth (huge amounts of signal information) at high speeds, so the immense signal-carrying capability of fiber-optics (its "broadband" characteristics) and the speed at which it transmits information are not significantly impaired.
