The speaker on this occasion was Phil Flanders MBA. FlnstTA. MILT, who is Director of R.H.A. Scotland & Northern Ireland. Phil explained that he nearly had not been able to attend as he had been at Heathrow Airport at the time when the BA airplane had crash landed. He was so intent on getting to the meeting that he had transferred to an earlier flight that had just got him to the meeting with a few moments to spare. He explained that some ten years ago he was offered the job with the R.H.A. at a time when their profile in these areas was much lower than it is now. In fact one person had expressed the view that he had taken the job as a pre-curser to retirement. All that has changed now and he finds that there are not enough hours in a day. He went on to explain the diversity of the job, dealing with such subjects as the movement of animals, the cost of fuel, the training of drivers (C.P.C.) and improving the standards of Northern Ireland haulier's. He told us that at the start of the last outbreak of 'Foot & Mouth' disease he had been called into the office at the weekend to work on gaining exceptions in regard to driver's hours.
