Top engineers call for joined-up thinking on exhaust emissions rules

Legislators in Europe and North America have been berated by a top Volvo engineer for dithering over exhaust emission rules governing diesel engine development. Lars-Goran Moberg, chief executive of Volvo Powertrain Corporation, used his keynote speech to a recent international conference on heavy-duty diesel emissions to urge law-makers to get their act together. "Repeated delays in ratifying exhaust emission limits and test procedures are creating major disruption to product development programmes," he said. "Even Euro-4 requirements, due to come into force in less than two years time, have yet to be covered by a finalised EU directive." Turning his fire on US federal and state legislators, Mr Moberg urged them to stop telling truck and engine makers how emission limits should be met. "Legislators should be competitively neutral," he said.
