I was very interested to read your article "In the eye of the perfect storm" in January's Transport Engineer. Your analysis of a 6×2 tractor (460-540hp) at 44 tonnes gcw covering 140,000km a year and with a total annual cost of £120,514 is of particular interest because it correlates well with an exercise we have done here at MAN.rnOur analysis confirms that the capital cost of the hardware is only the tip of the iceberg. In fact, 90 per cent of tractor unit operating costs have nothing to do with the truck itself. We broadly agree with your figures and reckon that fuel accounts for 45 per cent of total operating cost; driver and insurance 29 per cent; management and administration 10 per cent; and repair and maintenance six per cent. This is why we have put into place packages and services to help reduce fuel cost, improve driver performance, and significantly streamline transport administration, particularly in repair and maintenance and tyre management.
