The first two parts of this series of articles traced the renaissance of Perth's rundown 1970s suburban railway, then the revival with electrification. Now we look at the massive expansion, firstly with the new Northern Suburbs Railway and then the current construction. The first groundwork for the new $124 million double track electrified Northern Suburbs railway (NSR) between Perth and Joondalup started on 20 October 1989 in the Perth Station area. The NSR would consist of 29.2km of new railway from Perth to Currambine, north of Joondalup, built along the Mitchell Freeway median that had been set aside for a rapid transit system.fhis was the first suburban line to be built in Perth in the 20th Century. The line out of Perth was to be built on the southern side of the Fremantle line as far as Fitzgerald Street, where it would dive under that line and Roe Street to emerge in the centre of the Mitchell Freeway. Work started on excavating the tunnel in January 1991. The line speed was to be 110km/h. Patronage was expected to exceed the total of the three existing lines following their electrification.
