Sited as it is at the crossroads of the nation, Port Augusta is an important regional city in an arid landscape at the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. It is a growing town with significant investment by State and Commonwealth agencies through the years recognising its dominant location. While electricity production using Leigh Creek coal has long been a key industry, there are signs of progressive developments to other niches. Recently, a private company has developed a huge solar powered greenhouse development near the city utilising the desalinated water of the gulf to produce tomatoes and other produce in abundance. The city of Port Augusta is slowly sloughing off its rougher earlier roots with investment in parks and waterside redevelopments. There are positive signs for a future based on other options.
