Normal shock waves in a uniform van der Waals gas flow are studied analytically and numerically. First it is proved that there exist seven types of possible shock transition. Next by applying an evolution condition, it is confirmed numerically that only a supersonic-subsonic shock transition is stable. The supersonic-subsonic condition is, however, a necessary condition but not a sufficient condition for the shock to be stable. The stability criterion obtained numerically agrees completely with that proposed by Cramer & Kluwick. For all unsteady shock transitions, one-dimensional wave splitting occurs and the discontinuous wave fronts spread out with time. Finally a shock tube problem is treated numerically and several types of flow pattern are identified.
