The NA-YGN Annual Nuclear Science and Technology Drawing Contest

The NA-YGN Annual Nuclear Science and Technology (NS&T) Drawing Contest was piloted in May 2000. The idea was to use the contest as a bona-fide educational opportunity to talk to elementary school students and their teachers about the benefits of NS&T in their everyday lives. This vision required nuclear professionals to make a presentation to 4th and 5th grade classrooms and then solicit drawings about the material presented to the students. Since NA-YGN was at that time still a very young organization with very few members, the first Drawing Contest only involved two elementary schools around Madison, WI. All the drawings collected were displayed during the 2000 ANS Summer Meeting in San Diego, and the winners were selected by the leadership of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).
