Future Recycle of Used Nuclear Fuel in the United States-Resolution of Issues

Based on the resolutions described, a near-term decision to begin the decades-long transition to advanced, evolutionary, industrial-scale UNF recycling in the United States is needed, in combination with development of a high-level waste geologic repository, to demonstrate and provide a near-term disposal pathway for nuclear waste. Continued indefinite storage of UNF is not a permanent solution to nuclear waste disposal. However, interim storage as recommended by the BRC can be integrated within a collocated, physically protected recycle facility. By beginning UNF recycle sooner rather than later, a practical method of waste disposal can be shown to be possible.
