The River lea wanders down the border between Essex and Hertfordshire and meanders through the East End of London, joining the Thames at Canning Town in a series of wharves immediately opposite the Millennium Dome. On one of these, Trinity Buoy Wharf, a developer called Eric Reynolds of Urban Space Management put up a series of studios for artists and designers called Container City, as it was constructed of old shipping containers. Anyone travelling by way of Harwich has seen acres of these by the road to the port, and if it is true that, as The Guardian claims, there are a million superfluous ones in Britain, it must be because we import more than we export. They are 40 ft x 8 ft x 8 ft, and if you have seen them used as offices on building sites you will have noticed how their construction enables them to be stacked several stories high when space is tight.
