implementing the masterplan -some challenges

The fascinating collection of pieces on New Towns in the January 2017 edition of Town & Country Planning~1 prompted me to reflect on my own experiences of working in a New Town, and the questions raised about the potential future for New Towns. I worked in the finance department of Runcorn New Town between 1968 and 1974, under the innovative leadership of Chief Finance Officer Ken Enderby. Staff always dreaded Ken coming into their office and starting his conversation with 'whilst I was shaving this morning...', as it always indicated that he had had a 'bright idea'. In one case this involved me in several months' work.
