The International Hotel Industry: Sustainable Management

There is a rich and growing academic journal literature stream on the international hospitality industry, but book coverage of the topic lags by comparison. The academic publishing community seems to have settled on the notion that the market can accommodate no more than one book per year on the subject, if that, and that frosty pace has been observed since the early 1990s (Brotherton, 2003; Clarke & Chen, 2007; Crotts, Buhalis, & March, 2000; Cunill, 2006; Gee, 1994; Go & Pine, 1995; Jones & Pizam, 1993; Knowles, Diamantis, & El-Mourhabi, 2001, 2004; Kotas, Teare, Logie, Jayawardena, & Bowen, 1996; Teare & Olsen, 1992; Yu, 1999). This has resulted in a fragmented offering and a disappointing level of production, especially considering the vibrancy of the topic, and the important role that the international hospitality industry has played in recent decades as a globalisation force. An additional disenchantment has been that few second editions have followed the original.
