CHINA Authorities said security forces gunned down 14 protesters allegedly attacking a police station In Hotan, an oasis town In China's restive far-west region of Xinjiang. One official blamed terrorists for the violence. The protesters were Uighur, a Turkic Muslim minority group that is In the majority in Xinjiang but faces systemic discrimination at the hands of the state. Uighur exile groups claim the violence was the result of a police crackdown on a peaceful protest against seizures of Uighur land.
