A reflected-afterflow virtual-source (RAVS) method is introduced to obtain the transient dynamic response of an orthotropic cylindrical shell with infinite length subjected to a step plane wave. The Sanders thin shell theory is used to define the shell's dynamic behavior and the linear acoustic plane wave assumption is adopted. The elastic transient and vibratory responses of the orthotropic cylindrical shells are intensively investigated, and some interesting features of the effects of the shell radius and thickness upon the nondimensional radial velocity, mid-surface strain, Oth mode radial displacement and 1st mode radial velocity are revealed.
