KOREA AND THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY - THE STRATEGIC PRIORITIES

Early on the morning of 25th June 1950 the North Korean armies crossed the 38th parallel of latitude with the intention of uniting the country under communist rule. For the next three years the war that resulted was to dominate the Asian scene. Outstanding issues such as a peace treaty with Japan and an American commitment to defend Australia and New Zealand were brought nearer realisation, while the fighting in Indo-China acquired a new significance in the cold war.
