The 2010 Lancaster House Treaties on defence and security between the UK and France have ushered in a new era of bilateral military co-operation, if proclamations on the part of French government officials, made at elite conferences on the subject in Paris, are to be believed. Concrete examples include the cross-posting of officers - reminiscent of the posting of British officers in US military establishments during and since the Cold War - and close Franco-British co-operation in the Libya campaign, as well as in recent French operations in Mali. It is thus well worth looking at how the military challenges facing both countries look from the perspective of the director of strategic studies at the French defence giant Thales and lecturer at the Saint-Cyr military academy, Christian Malis, who is also a graduate of the French elite Ecole normale superieure.
