In the next four years, from 2014 to 2018, many thousands of British families will cross the Channel to visit the battlefield sites of the Great War. Even this reviewer's own regiment, with its tiny officer cadre, will make two such journeys in 2015. Most will have personal reasons; they go to see gravestones which bear their family names, to understand the narratives of their regiments, to comprehend the massive number of casualties, to be reminded of their youth and to be moved by the sadness of the messages at the foot of the headstones.
