The origin of the 'Adelantes' lies in the early days of rail privatisation. As part of its bid for the Great Western franchise in 1996, the winning company, Great Western Holdings, included a proposal to increase service frequency by splitting part of the existing HST fleet into 1+4 'mini' sets. Unexpectedly high passenger growth soon rendered that idea illogical, so an order was placed with trainbuilder Alstom for half a do/en five-car 125mph DMUs, designated Class 180. The trains were to be from Alstom's new 'Coradia 1000' range and early negotiations Included the provision of two spare coaches, making 32 vehicles in all. The realisation that two carriages worth a million pounds apiece would be spending most of their time standing idle soon saw that plan abandoned too ― and with passenger growth continuing to boom, the order was increased in 1998 to 70 vehicles, comprising 14 five-car sets. Discussions with sister train operating company North Western Trains had also resulted in an order being placed with Alstom for 16 three-car Class 180 sets for that TOC's ambitious plan to operate a range of 125mph North-West to London services.
