The Alr was formed in 2002 with the first section opened to the public on August 9, 2003. Since extended to just over 900 yards, it is set in beautiful countryside and is within sound of the 15in gauge Bure Valley Railway and within sight of Network Rail's standard gauge Bittern Line.
