Felixstowe begins 29th daily rail service

THE Port of Felixstowe, the UK's largest container port, started operating its 29th daily rail service from October 1. The new train is operated by GB Railfreight and runs to Manchester five days a week. Working closely with GB Railfreight, the additional service comes after the completion by Hutchinson Ports of an investment programme at the South terminal that has seen the installation of new sidings, some track re-laying, and two new gantry cranes. In 2012, the rail facilities will be expanded at Felixstowe with the creation of a third rail terminal. The new terminal, to be co-financed by the European Union's Trans-European Network budget, will be the first in the UK designed to accommodate longer, 30-wagon, freight trains.
