Network Rail fined £100,000 for offences

NETWORK Rail has been fined a total of £100,000 with nearly £37,000 in costs after admitting two breaches of the Health & Safety at Work Act. In the first incident, NR was fined £80,000 with £32,000 costs at Leicester Crown Court on October 3 after a tipper lorry brought down a footbridge at Barrow-upon-Soar on February 1,2008. Seconds after the collapse, the bridge was hit by a Class 158 travelling at 65mph which derailed. The train driver suffered serious injuries. Then on October 18, a fine of £20,000 with £4,750 costs was imposed on NR because it built an electrical building at a crossing in Eastergate, Chichester, which severely restricted visibility at the private crossing.
