THE LOCOMOTIVE BULIDERS OF GREAT BRITAIN 1804-2011

This table lists the principal locomotive builders in Great Britain, catalogued by geographic location. Works owned by railway companies are indicated in italics and do not necessarily indicate the original founding company. The majority of entries are of commercial manufacturers and although narrow gauge locos were built by many of those, the list is concentrated primarily on locos of metre gauge and wider. The dates represent inclusive years of production, rather than foundation and closure. So, for example, Neilson & Co was first established in Glasgow in 1836 but did not begin building locomotives until 1843. Likewise, works such as Caerphilly, Newton Abbot, Boston and Springhead (Hull) are not included as they were repair shops only (although they do appear on our special map on page 47).
