Just Prior to the privatisation of the UK's railways in 1996 a handful of British Rail locos were sold abroad, namely four Class 20s for use with Compagnie de Chemin de Fer Departementaux in 1992; they remained in France for 13 years until they were repatriated to the UK. They were only the first, as literally dozens followed across a wide range of classes, mostly used in the construction of high speed rail lines in France and Spain. However, others were sent to The Netherlands, Italy, Kosovo, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia, and many remain active. Each of the book's chapters deals with a class and provides introductory text and details of each loco involved, including delivery and returns dates to and from the continent. Some of the text is particularly detailed and provides a wealth of information about the locos' histories while overseas, including several modifications made, notably to the AC locos sent to Bulgaria and Hungary. But what really stands the book out is the superb photography, all of which is previously unpublished. Images of the locos in action, on shed and undergoing modification/ maintenance really help to illustrate the stories of the classes involved (20, 37, 47, 56, 58, 86, 87 and 92).
