The world's first true railway locomotive was built by Richard Trevithick in the Welsh town of Merthyr Tydfil in 1804. Since that historic day, Great Britain has manufactured no fewer than 130,000 locomotives -110,000 of which were steam. This is the remarkable story of how Britain became a 'workshop to the world' THE year 1996 is probably best know in railway circles for the launch of the first privatised train operating company. It is not spoken of in the same revered tones as 1825, 1923, 1948 or 1968 - yet it should be. For it was the year in which the great British locomotive-building industry effectively came to an end.
