Obstacle detection lasers, designed to tell remotely based signallers whether anyone or anything is lying on a level crossing before the barriers are lowered, have been failing in trials due to mud being thrown onto the lens by passing traffic and by brake dust from trains. Network Rail is now deciding whether to fit automatic hoods or wipers, or dispense with the lowest-level lens altogether.
