Commissioning of run-round loop at Blaenavon ends P&BRtop-and-tails

The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway commissioned the run-round loop at Blaenavon (High Level) in time for late-May bank holiday operations. The loop significantly alters the way the line can be worked, since a run-round at Blaenavon eliminates the need for top-and tail working to and from this station. The loco runs round again at Furnace Sidings to propel the train up the steep gradient to Whistle Inn. On special event days, a second loco (steam or diesel) works the Big Pit branch; on 'ordinary'operating dates one loco and train can handle branch and main line working.
