The Met's motive power history is complex, but trains were initially hauled by GWR Metropolitan class 2-4-0 broad gauge tank engines. The two companies quickly fell out in 1863, whereupon the Great Northern stepped in with standard gauge locos until 1864 when the Met acquired its own fleet of 4-4-0 condensing tanks from Beyer Peacock. They initially burned coke to keep down the smoke, but began to be converted to smokeless coal from 1869. By 1870, there were 44 such engines.
