The Scottish Government has confirmed that the ScotRail franchise is to be extended by four months, from November 2014 to March 2015. The change - which has nothing to do with the franchise extensions being forced upon the DfT in England - has been made so that franchisee First Group, or whoever takes over from it, will not have to deal with Christmas and the worst of winter weather as its first major headache. Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown described it as "allowing a prudent procurement programme".
