675 Siemens locos for Russia

Siemens and its Russian partner Sinara have won a contract to supply 675 electric locomotives to Russian Railways (RZD). Sinara and Siemens formed a joint venture - Ural Locomotives - in 2010 to build electric locomotives in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, north of Yekaterinburg, where Siemens is also constructing a €400million production plant which will build more than 1200'Desiro'EMU vehicles for RZD. The first order for 221 3kV DC Class 2ES10Granit8,800kW double-unit Bo-Bo+Bo-Bo locos was placed in 221; RZD has now increased this order to 675 locos, for delivery by 2020. RZD expects that by 2015 all of the components used in these locos will be made in Russia; currently, about 30% are imported, mainly from Siemens factories in Germany.
