Wensleydale fined after overgrown lineside leads to level crossing crash

The Wensleydale Railway was fined ￡4,000 and ordered to pay ￡4,000 costs by Northallerton magistrates'court on November 19 as a result of a level crossing crash. The sentence followed a prosecution brought by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) for breaches of health & safety law that led to a collision between a train and a car at a level crossing near the North Yorkshire village of Newton-le-Willows (see Steam News, p69). The railway pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that persons not in their employment were not exposed to risks contrary to the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
