Hitachi has taken over the former Eurostar depot at North Pole, in west London. The huge site, which stretches for more than half a mile and houses two major shed buildings, has been in mothballs since Eurostar moved to a new depot at Temple Mills in November 2007, but Hitachi has acquired it for commissioning and servicing the Class 800 Intercity Express trains it is building for Great Western services. 'SACRED Soil'collected from the Belgian battlefields of the First World War is being transported to London Waterloo station as part of the war centenary commemorations. The soil, from Ypres town cemetery, will be taken from Waterloo to London's Wellington barracks, where it will form part of the Flanders Fields Memorial Garden. The garden is due to be formally opened by HM Queen anc King Philippe of Belgium on November 6.
