Caledonian Railway 0-4-4T No. 419 is coming back together at Bo'ness. Its new axleboxes (replacing those stolen last year) have been trial fitted and machined and its wheels have been turned. With the loco's boiler having passed its steam test after repairs at Riley & Son (E), Bury, the unique surviving 419 is on target for a mid-2015 return to running, finished in light'Caley' blue. A successful steam test was carried out on 'Modified Hall' No. 6989 Wightwick Hall on August 11. This significant development took place as its restoration group nears the end of a project that has spanned five decades. The Buckinghamshire Railway Centre-based loco (saved from Barry scrapyard in 1978) is to run for the first time in the early new year. It will return to steam in lined BR passenger green livery, with the fictional shedcode 38G.This assumes that is the shedcode Quainton would have been designated, had it had its own depot. A full set of driving wheel tyres has been procured by the Dinmore Manor Locomotive Ltd for fitting to its 2884 2-8-0 No. 3850, in anticipation of its next overhaul. The new components for the 2-8-0 had originally been bought by West Somerset Railway (its home base) in 2008 as an insurance measure for the Minehead-based loco, after an alarming increase in tyre wear was discovered, following erroneous railhead grinding.
