People have been building railway lines for over 170 years. Germany's first trunk line between Leipzig and Dresden entered service in 1839 - and even if at the time nobody referred to it as a "project", this undertaking by the Leipzig-Dresden Railway Company was Germany's first-ever major railway construction project.
