One sphere in which Africa has unquestionably influenced universal culture is music. Black slaves were also the originators of voodoo and the different syncretic religions in the Caribbean and South America. Certain cults and musical styles are now returning to their roots in Africa, bearing witness to the exceptional wealth of this cultural blending, which finds probably its most colourful expression in the Notting Hill carnival in London.
