PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a timbre control method by which a source signal can be reproduced without adding any special circuit and attenuation of harmonics corresponding to percussion strength can be reproduced. PSOLUTION: The source signal is processed by a frequency characteristic time variation control means 3 so as to be a reverse characteristic of a time variation filter 6 varying a cutoff frequency when read-out waveform data are filtered with time, and stored in a waveform memory 4; when the stored signal is read out and filtered by the time variation filter 6, a filter envelope control means 7 controls time variation of the cutoff frequency of the time variation filter 6 according to percussion strength. Consequently, the source signal can be reproduced without adding any special circuit and attenuation of harmonics corresponding to the percussion strength can be reproduced.
