PWR-3: a new nuclear plant for the UK's Successor submarine

In May 2012, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that the programme to build a Successor class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) had passed its Initial Gate milestone, enabling the programme to transition into a five-year Assessment Phase. What was also confirmed in the post-Initial Gate statement was the decision to develop a new pressurised water reactor nuclear power plant, known as PWR-3, for the Successor submarine design.
