Canada plans interim solution to loss of replenishment vessels

The Royal Canadian Navy has found itself with a difficult situation to manage due to the earlier than anticipated withdrawal from service of its Protecteur-class replenishment vessels. It is already in the midst of the most intensive and comprehensive period of fleet modernisation and renewal in its peacetime history, a process that is touching on all elements of its fleet. This period of transition includes the modernisation of its 12 Halifax-class frigates, the retirement of the two Protecteur-class replenishment ships and two Iroquois-class destroyers and the procurement of three new classes of ships: the Joint Support Ships (JSS); the Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships; and the new Canadian Surface Combatants, as well as the integration of new maritime helicopters into fleet service.
